Pilates is total body conditioning, composed of a system of exercises that work to challenge the core, increase body awareness and improve posture and alignment. Pilates is named after its creator, Joseph Pilates, who developed the system of exercises in the early 1900's during World War I, having worked with recovering soliders during the war, and later diverse clientele in New York City. Over the years, Pilates' work has made its way to mainstream fitness and rehabilitative settings.
